Une toile qui sort du cadre strict de la série « Retour à l’espace ». Le noir de l’espace ne rempli pas la toile… et la fusée en sort. L’univers dispose-t-il de frontières ou est-il infini ?

La théorie du Big Bang (confirmée par l’expérience et découlant de la théorie d’Einstein), nous indique que l’espace est en expansion. Notre univers semble être une sorte de bulle qui gonfle. La taille de l’univers observable (en 2024) est d’au moins environ 45 milliards d’années-lumière (tout autour de nous) mais nous ne savons pas si l’univers total lui-même est fini, comme le pensent certains scientifiques, ou infini comme le pensent d’autres chercheurs. L’univers observable contient environ 7 × 10²² étoiles, répandues dans environ 100 milliards de galaxies.

Il est cependant possible que l’univers observable ne soit qu’une infime partie d’un univers réel beaucoup plus grand.

L’univers est-il fini ou infini ?
L’Univers ne peut pas posséder de « bord » au sens intuitif du terme. En effet, l’existence de bord impliquerait l’existence d’un extérieur à l’univers. Or, par définition, l’univers est l’ensemble de tout ce qui existe, il ne peut donc rien exister à l’extérieur. Toutefois, cela ne signifie pas que l’univers est infini, il peut être fini sans avoir de « bord », sans avoir en fait d’extérieur.

A painting that goes beyond the strict framework of the ‘Return to Space’ series. The black of space doesn’t fill the canvas… and the rocket leaves it. Does the universe have borders or is it infinite?

The Big Bang theory (confirmed by experiment and derived from Einstein’s theory) tells us that space is expanding. Our universe seems to be a kind of bubble that is inflating. The size of the observable universe (in 2024) is at least about 45 billion light years (all around us), but we don’t know whether the total universe itself is finite, as some scientists think, or infinite, as other researchers believe. The observable universe contains about 7 × 1022 stars, spread across about 100 billion galaxies.

However, it is possible that the observable universe is just a tiny part of a much larger real universe.

Is the universe finite or infinite?
The Universe cannot have an ‘edge’ in the intuitive sense of the term. Indeed, the existence of an edge would imply the existence of an exterior to the universe. However, by definition, the universe is the totality of everything that exists, so there can be nothing outside it. However, this does not mean that the universe is infinite; it can be finite without having an ‘edge’, without in fact having an exterior.
